Results & Research

Students on a BoatAt Massachusetts 2020, research is central to our work. We continually seek to document, study and analyze efforts to expand learning opportunities—both in Massachusetts and elsewhere. We then leverage these findings to craft the most effective policies and the most focused technical assistance possible. And we ultimately depend on research to show that ELT schools are, indeed,  improving academic outcomes, improving student engagement, and opening new opportunities for children.

Our research falls into two categories:

The Impact of the Massachusetts ELT Initiative --

Our first set of research involves taking a close look at the ELT schools in Massachusetts to better understand how and why additional time generates particular effects on a range of student outcomes. Some of this research we conduct on our own and includes an annual review of the implementation and outcomes of the ELT schools in Massachusetts.

In addition, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has contracted with Abt Associates, Inc., an independent evaluator, to conduct a six-year comprehensive study of the Massachusetts ELT schools.

Research on Time and Learning

This second category takes a broader perspective on what researchers have explored about the impact of expanded time in schools and the complex relationship between time and learning. W

We have also linked to some of the most important studies on the topic of time and learning, as well as syntheses of research over the last 30 years and a comprehensive list of sources related to time and learning.
