ELT Initiative

Expanding learning time offers an opportunity for teachers and school leaders to redesign the school day or school year to meet the specific needs of their students, teachers, and families.  

The Expanded Learning Time Initiative is about rethinking from the ground up what a school day or year means. It’s an opportunity to “think big!”

This section of the Planning Guide focuses on the most important component of developing your ELT plan—how you will rethink what is taught, how it is taught, and how students and teachers spend their time in school. ELT is not about tacking on a new class or two to the end of the day. ELT is about fundamentally rethinking how school is done from the ground up. It is a tremendous opportunity to improve student outcomes and deepen student engagement that requires some “out-of-the-box” thinking. It’s an opportunity for teachers, administrators, and families to think big!
